Matthew One – 2010

Chapter 1The genealogy of Matt 1 is interestingly contrasted to that of Luke 3:23.  Here is a link that breaks the code, so to speak.  It’s interesting and fun. I haven’t checked out the website so I don’t know if it’s a good one or not, but I read the summary of Jeconiah’s curse and it is a good enough explanation in simple terms.

★ vs. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,c because he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”d—which means, “God with us.” I have had trouble with this passage since I  can remember reading it.  Verse 21 says “give him the name Jesus“, verse 23 says “they will call him Immanuel [capital ‘I’ indicates pronoun].  These 2 verses almost side by side seem to contradict each other.  I can see how they don’t, however it seems a little to loose to be a good understanding so I would love for someone to try and explain why Jesus gets a very Common name like Jesus a derivative of Joshua, instead of his prophesied name Immanuel?
